Activity for my students: a blog entry

Dear student,
We are compiling a student blog about a world-famous, influential people in the arts and sciences. Please write a short piece (no more than 200 words) includig information about where they live(d), when they did their work, their place in history, why they are influential, and who they have influenced. Do not write abour political leaders, sports sars or businesspeople. Post your entry below. (Activity on page 113 of your textbook)

    Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881 and he died in Mougins, France in 1973. He was a very important painter and sculpter who spent his adult life in France. He was one of the most revolutionary painter of 20th century with Matisse and Duchamp. He is also known for being the father of Cubism.
    At 7, he had formal artistic training from his father who taught him figure drawing and oil painting. At 13, he moved to Barcelona and he was admited in School's Fine Arts of Barcelona in 1885. His father persuaded the officials at the academy to allow his son to take an entrance exam for the advanced class. This process often took students a month, but Picasso completed it in a week. When he was 16, he moved to Madrid and he entered in Madrid Royal Academy of San Fernando which was the best fine arts school in Spain but he was bored and he stopped attending to classes.
    Pablo Picasso started to paint before 1900 and he admired the Greco's pictures.
    Picasso's pictures are divided in three big categories: Blue Period, Rose Period and Cubism.

  2. Madona "the queen of pop" She was the most prominent pop singer in the world for three decades (from 70s to 90s). She also is an actress, composer and entrepreneur. She has sold more than 300 millions records. She is recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records.
    Born in Bay City,Michigan in 1958. But she moved to New York in 1977 to improve her career in modern dance, During the 70s and 80s she participated in the music groups Breakfast Club. In the 1982 she released her first album selftitled "Madonna".this was the first of a lot of succesful albums like the Grammy Award winners Ray of Light (1998) and Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). We must say that her style is so brilliant that influences other artists around the world.
    On the other hand, Madonna's popularity was further enhanced with the film "Desperately seeking Susan". Moreover, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Evita in 1996.
    To conclude we can say that she is a charismatic, influential and very polemic artist that nowadays she continues in the top of the music.

  3. William Shakespeare is one of the most influential writer of the world. He was born in Strattford-upon-Avon, his birthdate is not clear but he was baptised at 26th April 1564.
    He worked in different fields of the literature for example: theatre, poetry and prose. His works are classificated in three: comedies, histories and tragedies. His main works are Hamlet, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Macbeth,…
    His work has high quality and he is considered like one of the writers of the history. William Shakespeare is a man who is linked to any book of literature and he has been studied by all students of literature.

  4. William Wallace was a Scottish landowner who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
    Born in Elderslie in 1270. Being the youngest son and not correspond to succeed his father in the lands, his life seemed oriented clergy. As a teenager he was educated in an abbey in Dunipace, near Stirling, where he was a pupil of his paternal uncle and he learned four languages: French, Latin, Gaelic and English. Later he married Marian Braidfoot after his return to the village where he was born.
    The King of England wanted to join England and Scotland. Wallace was against this edea and he devastated completely to English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Later, he sent an army to conquer York, the largest city of northern England and the English city key. Finally, He was captured and sentenced to death for treason against the king. He has been very influential because he fought to get freedom of his country.

  5. Francisco de Goya was a famous Spanish Romantic pinter. In his masterpieces he show his aged, the Peninsular War, for this reason one of the most important work was the Disasters of War.

    He was born in Fuendetodos, Aragón, Spain, on March 30, 1746. By 14, Goya studied under the painter José Luzán. He moved to Madrid where he studied with Anton Raphael Mengs a painter who was popular with Spanish royalty. Then, he studied with Francisco Bayeu y Subías and his painting began to show signs of the delicate tonalities for which Goya became famous. During mid-career most of his masterpiece was done for Spanish nobility on the contrary, in his later years he paint about the Peninsular War as the Third of May in 1808.

    His masterpieces was a model for the work of artists of later generations, notably Manet, Picasso and Francis Bacon.

    Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomes, knows as Paco de Lucia was a flamenco composer. He was one of the most representative musician in Spain and he introduced a New Flamenco style that changed the history of this kind of music.

    Paco de Lucía was born on 21 December 1947 in Algeciras (Cadiz). He was the youngest of the five children of a flamenco guitarist family; he adopted his nickname for his mother Lucia because in Algeciras there were many Pacos and Pablos and he wanted to have a different name. At the age of five, his father introduced Paco in the guitar world and he practiced alone 12 hours a day. The most important Paco’s influence was Niño Ricardo and he said “all of us youngsters would look up to him, trying to learn from him and copy him”. By eleven, he made his first public appearance on the Radio and a year later he won an important prize at the Festival Concurso International Flamenco de Jerez de la Frontera.

    In 1960s, he started to work with his brother Pepe but he was a representative person when he knew to Camaron de la Isla and worked with him.

    Michael Joseph Jackson was an American recording artist, actor, producer, dancer and philanthropist. Often referred to by the honorific nickname "The King of Pop", his contributions to music, dance, and fashion, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.

    Michael Jackson was born on 29th August in 1958. He was the eight of ten children in an workin-class family in Gary (Indiana). He debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1968, and began his solo career in 1971.

    Michel composed pop music. He recorded numerous popular albums. He won eight Grammys and eight American Music Awards, making him the most awarded artist in one night for both award shows. He has been very influential for a lot pop musicians.

    Kurt Cobain is probably the m,ost important singer in the modern era. A vocalist, composer and guitar player that isbest known with the name of the group Nirvana.
    Born in 1967 in Washington, he created a band called Nirvana in Seattle in 1985. They became popular with the album Bleach, in 1989 and one of the most influential song was "Smells like teen spirit".
    Hedied in 1994 in Seattle. During his life he sold 25 millions of albums in the USA and 75 millions in the world. He created 3 albums "Bleach", "Nevermind" and "Incesticide". Nowadays he is considered the creator of the most important group of the Generation X.

    George Harrison was a very inspirational person in the 60’s and 70’s culture. He was a famous musician who belonged to The Beatles, also he was a influential cinema and music producer.
    He was born in Liverpool in 25th of february of 1943. When he was twelve years old, he felt terrible illnes and he had to stay a long time in the hospital, in that just moment he bought his first guitar. In 1958 he knew the members of the group Quarrymen, who become The Beatles after. At the beginning he wasn’t a really good guitar player, but through the time thanks to the practice he become a creative guitar player. The Beatles are still the most influential rock band nowadays.
    When The Beatles broke up Harrison started a new period like a compositor (he wrote an d interpreted the disc All Things Must Pass, which was a absolutely success)producer (cinema and music producer). He helped Ravi Shankar to show indian music around the world. And he was the producer of the film “The life of Bryan” by the Monty Phytons, in which film he appeared.

    Diego Velazquez was a Spanish painter who lived between 1599- 1660. Velazquez was the leading artist in the court Philip IV. He was considerated one of the most artist in the Spanish Golden Age. The famous painting is "Las Meninas".

    Velazquez was born in Seville. He was the son of a lawyer called Juan Rodrigruez. when Velazquez was a child he was living with his granparents who were educated him in languages and philosophy. after than, when he was 12 years old, Velazquez began to serve as an apprentice under Francisco Pacheco, an artist and teacher in Seville.
    In his tweenties, Velazquez went to Madrid for painting. in that time, Velázquez married Juana, daughter of his teacher Pacheco.

    Velazquez was a famous painter who was paining a lot of painting. He was influenced by Francisco Pàcheco, Raphael or Michelangelo. From that time, Velazquez started painting "Las Meninas" or "Old Woman Frying Eggs" are two of painting most famous.

    Michael Philip Jagger is an English musician, singer, songwriter, actor and he is the lead vocalist and a founder member of the Rolling Stones. Also his occupations are record and film producer, actor, screenwriter. His musical group is probably the most rock famous in history.

    Mick Jagger was born the 26 July 1943 in Dartford, Kent, England and he grew up into a middle-class family. First he was in the church choir. The group was founded in 1960's, later, the band went on their first tour in the United Kingdom. By 1964, the band were more famous even than the Beatles. The band took part in a demonstration against the Vietnam War and have anarchistic`s influence. They have recorded a lot of succesful albums and his discography is known around the world.

    Mick Jagger and his band, the Stones has concert still nowadays and he appears in famous films like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, alongside Depp and Richards.

  12. Fito Cabrales is probably the Spanish most famous rock musician. A guitar-player, composer and performer, he is best known in the country for his two proyects: platero y tu and fito y fitipaldis, in which we can find great hits like "al cantar" or "por la boca vive el pez".

    Born into a humble neighborhood in Zabala (Bilbao) in 1966, he started working as waiter in his father´s bar, and then started to play the guitar and sing with his friends in a storage room. This group began to be popular and they became to be a famous rock band. In 1998 he created a new band called Fito y Fitipaldis, with seeking new sounds and stiles of rock like country or folk, with whom he influenced both young and adult people. And with this band he continue breaking records and reaping successes.

    Actualy he is doing a tour along the most important theatres of the country, looking for more intimate concerts. Also in 2008 he publised a autobiography called "Soy todo lo que me pasa". He has been very influential in the history of the spanish rock because he bring us new kinds of rock and young sounds, and letters with which many people feel identified.

  13. Steven Paul Jobs, known as Steve Jobs, he was a very powerfull businessman and one of the richest men in the world. First of all, I will start saying that he did many different business. Certainly, his best business was the creation of Apple company in 1976. Another important thing to be mentioned, the developing of many modern technology machines such as the first personal computer in the history of computers, which was called the Macintosh. In fact, this computer was de first that used a mouse. So, this development made working easily with computers. Others revolutionary achievements of Steve Job´s company were machines like Ipod which replaced the walkman or discman. The reason was, that we could introduce a lot of sings in an ítem smaller that we can cacht with only one hand. And one of the latest invents was the Iphone, one of the best smartphones of the market. Finally, I guess that Steve Jobs was a good example of hard working and he demostrated everybody can get their dreams working hard. To finish, I´ll add one of his phrases.
    “Th eones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do”

    James Cameron is a famous film producer, deep-sea explorer, screenwriter and editor. His main films are “Titanic” and “Avatar”. Moreover, he filmed other films like “The Terminator”.
    Cameron born in Ontario, Canada in 1954. He grew up in a rich family whose father´s name is Philip Cameron and Shirley Cameron, her mother. Star Wars was the film which he realised that he must be film producer but his opportunity became thanks to film producer Ovidio G. Assonitis. Before, he worked like mechanic and lorry driver.

    He is very important in the cinema´s history because of two highest-grossing films of all time. Add of his prize like best Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Film Editing.

    His real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos. He was born in Venice Republic in 1541. He was a painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance.

    He worked for 26 years in Creta, then he moved to Italy and studied Michelangelo´s style. Some years later he moved to Toledo where he lived until his death.
    He was very famous artist because his works of art are inspired in Christian religion, so they are extraordinary and divine. Nowadays, he is considerate the biggest artist in the occidental civilisation.
    Toledo was the religious capital of Spain and a populous city and he painted the majority of work of arts. Two of his work of arts more importants are “El expolio” and “View of Toledo”.

  16. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Dutch Reaissance humanist who dedicated to theologism, philosophy, philology and he was a Catholic priest.
    He was born in Burgundian Netherlands in 1466. Firstly, when he was nine, he went to Deventer, the best Latin school of the country, where he learnt Greek and Latin.
    After that, in 1494 he studied in Paris and in Cambridge he taught theologism and Greek.
    Actually, his ideas have had much importance and they have been taught such a model of some countries. Some of them are: the liberalization of the religions, the religious tolerance and his fight against the heretics.
    His popularity is in the same level asincluding , Aristotle, Saint Augustine, Saint John Chrysostom and Cicero.

  17. Michael Jackson was probably the most popular singer, dancer, and composer about pop music. he was known like the´´ King of pop´.
    He was born into a poor family in Indiane in 1958, he started to sing at the age of 5 years old with his four brothers, whose group was called “Jackson Five”. In 1971 he started to sing alone, one of the most famous album was Thriller (1982). This disc become the best seller in pop history. other albums were “off the Wall”, “Bad”, “Dangerous” ,etc. He died 25 July 2009 in California, at the age of 46, althoug people still remember him and continous buying his music.
    Michel Jackson has sold 400 million discs, so he is the most known musician around the world.

    Antonio Gaudí is probably the most famous architect in Spain. He is an example of modernism because he was very original in his works. He changed the architecture´s world, however his talent wasn´t accepted by others artists since he died.

    Antonio Gaudí was born on 25 June 1852 in Reus, Spain. By thirtenn, he started to do his first works to pay his studies at the university of Barcelona. His works were very succesful but the most important work is La Sagrada Familia, that is the cathedral of Barcelona. He died 10 June 1926 hit by a tram....

  19. Bradley Cooper is an actor who lived in USA. He was born in 1975 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother Gloria worked for a local NBC Station, his father was a stockbroker and he has a sister called Holly.
    Bradley graduated in 1997, he moved to New York City to enroll in the Masters of Fine Arts program.While still in Master he began his professional career appearing in Sex and the city with Sarah Jessica Parker.
    His favourite actor is Daniel Day-Lewis who is a big influence for him.
    He is known for acting in films like Failure to Launch (2006), Yes Man (2008), He's Just Not That Into You (2009), The A-Team (2010) or Valentine's Day (2010), but his more famous films are The Hangover (2009), The Hangover Part II (2011), The Hangover Part III (2013) and the last film where he has worked is Silver Linings Playbook (2012).

    Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was one of the most important novelist , poet, and playwright of Spain. His magnum opus, Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern European novel, is a classic of Western literature, and is regarded amongst the best works of fiction ever written.
    He was born in 1547 in Madrid. In 1569, Cervantes moved to Rome where he worked as chamber assistant of a wealthy priest. Then he was a soldier in a Spanish Navy infantry until 1575. During his service like a soldier he lost his left arm in the Battle of Lepanto. In 1605 he published the most important novel in the world, Don Quixote. This novel has been known around the world and has been traduced in many languages.
    Cervantes wrote other important novels like La Galatea, that is a pastoral novel. During the last 9 years of his life, he published the Exemplary Novels in 1613, the Journey to Parnassus in 1614, and in 1615, the Ocho comedias y ocho entremeses and the second part of Don Quixote. He died in 1616 in Madrid.

  21. Adolfo Suarez was born in Avila (Spain) in 1932 and he died yesterday. He was the most important politician and lawyer in Spain, in addition he was the first minister, who managed the transition to democracy.
    He studied at the Salamanca University. When he was 38 years old, he became in a president`s national movement. He was chosen by the monarch to lead the nation 1976. There was a change in Spain. For this reason, before people must have thought the same way`s dictador and then Suarez made a change in the goverment. The spanish population could talk about their free dreams.
    Thank for this person, nowadays we have a democracy, which we can choose the goverment. He has been very influential every young people in the transition.

    ALBERT EINSTEIN
    He was probably one of the pilars of modern physics .He was a German- born theoretical physicist . He is best known for his formula E=mc^2 , that is the base of the Relativity theory. In his beginning he broke with Newton’s classic physics theory, and led the development of his special theory of relativity.
    Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, in the German empire on 14 March 1879. Contrary to popular suggestions , Albert was an excellent student at the first school and he was right-handed. At the age of sixteen he entered in the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zürich, there he continued his secondary school and he fell in love with a classmate, Mileva Maric also enrrolled at the polytechnic.
    Albert , in 1921, received the Nobel prize in physics for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect. He dead on 17 April 1955, throughout his life, Einstein published hundreds of books and articles and collaborated with other scientists.

    My biggest passion is Flamenco music. I learned to play the guitar thirty years ago. I`m going to talk about Paco de Lucía, he influenced me a lot.
    Paco de Lucía was born on 21 December 1947 in Algeciras. His father introduced Paco to the guitar at a young age of 5 years old. In 1958, at age 11, Paco made his first public appearance on Radio Algeciras.

    Moreover in the late 1960s, Paco de Lucía knew other new talents in the flamenco the singer Camarón de la Isla. They recorded ten albums together. He was best known in the world for his collaborations with the best guitar player such as Eric Clapton, Enrique Morente, and other famous singers like Plácido Domingo, and Julio Iglesias. In 2004, he won the Prince of Asturias Awards.
    Paco de Lucía had a revolutionary influence on flamenco music as a composer .
    Finally he died from a heart attack on 25 February 2014. He was a great simbol for Spain in the world.

  24. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most important Italian person in Renaissance. He was born in 1452, in the Republic of Florence. He was a polymath because he had several skills but the most important fields in which he emphasised as a painter, sculptor, architect and inventor. He was a great genius.
    Firstly, He lived in the Renissance a period of time where the culture was developed incredibly by several artist and inventors.
    One the one hand, As a painter he created a wonderful pieces of art. Among his paintings stand out The Mona Lisa, whith a misterious smile, and a religious art painting Madonnas, Christ, The Virgin and The Angels. Other was the vitrubio man and The Last Supper. On the other hand, he was an influential person but the politics was thinking that Leonardo was insane.
    Finaly, he left a legacy to posterity as one of the most important and charismatic of the characters history. He died in 1519, Amboise (Kingdom of France).

    Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, or Leonardo Da Vinci, was an Italian artist. He was born on 15th April 1452 and died on 2nd May 1519. He was a very influential renaissance person, because he was a polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer.

    Leonardo was born in the town of Vinci in the region of Florence. His father was a notary and his mother was a peasant, in the early days he was educated in the studio of the painter Verrocchio. He lived in Milan, Rome, Bologna, Venice and in his later days in France.

    As a painter his most famous paintings were the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, and his most famous drawing is the Vitruvian man. He has had one of the most prolific minds of all times because he could design a lot of technological invents, as a flying machine, weapons, concentrated solar power... He also was an empirical scientist and made important discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, optics and hydrodynamics. In a few words he was an exceptional person in the mankind.

    René Descartes was a very important philosopher, scientist and mathematician in the 17th century. He is known for his contribution in the geometry with the Cartesian coordinates graph, whose name is in honour of him (Cartesius is his name in Latin), and also he is known as the “Father of Modern Philosophy”, with the famous skepticism of Descartes.
    He was born in 1595 in Indre-et-Loire, France. Descartes graduated from the Jesuit Collège Royal Henry-Le-Grand. He had a degree in law from the University of Poitiers in 1616.
    He was recruited in the army of Maurice of Nassau in the Dutch Republic, where he started to study mathematics, physics and philosophy. Descartes was one of the most influential persons in the Scientific Revolution. Probably, his most famous concise phrase was “cogito ergo sum” (I think, therefore I am).
    René Descartes died of pneumonia on 11 February 1650 in Stockholm, Sweden. His remains were taken to France and buried in the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris.
